Where Are You Going? To See My Friend by Eric Carle & Kazuo Iwamura
Doshin-Sha Publishing 2001
This simple picture book uses repetitive text to describe animal noises in English & Japanese. The first half of the book is written & illustrated by Carle, in English. The second half of the book is written & illustrated by Iwamura, in Japanese. This is a fun & simple way to expose children to written Japanese language. Be aware, the second half of the book is in Japanese only and lends itself to the question, “What do you think the characters are saying?”
I thought this book was very interesting. It had bright colors and the illustrations were very good. I liked how the book contained both English and Japanese however I do wish I could have understood what the second part was trying to say. There were no negatives for me since it showed the two languages coming together in the middle of the book as they sang and danced together. I would say this is intended for younger children, like kindergarten or first grade. It is a very easy read and great example of multiculturalism.
