In this children's story we get to experience a day at the beach through the eyes of a young girl. This story is told in both English and Spanish as the narrator uses her five senses to explore the ocean and the gifts it has to offer. The illustrations add beautiful images to complement the author's words. Hello Ocean Hola Marr could be utilized with students in both lower and upper grades as a way to discuss the power of vivid language and sensory details. It is also a great tool for introducing some basic Spanish or English language terms and phrases. This multicultural text helps readers understand that although we are all different we all make connections to the wonders of nature.
I really liked how this was in English and Spanish! In addition to the teaching connections you mentioned, it is wonderful how the author used rhyme throughout the book - which would be a great way for older students to practice using rhyme by discussing their own experience with senses!
