Elizabeti's Doll

Book Review (Brittany Hearn)
Title: Elizabeti's Doll
Author: Stephanie Stuve-Bodeen
Illustrator: Christy Hale
Published Date: 1998

In the book “Elizabeti’s  Doll” Elizabeti’s mother has a new baby. Elizabeti decides that she wants a baby of her own. She finds a rock that she names Eva and mimics the things her mother does with her new baby brother. The book Elizabeti’s Doll is a great book. However after reading the book I had to ask what was the message/them of this story? All I could think about is the reactions  I would receive from my fifth grade students after reading this book. I would expect comments such as “ So the main idea of the story was that Elizabeti played with a rock,” or “Ms. Hearn what was the point of this book.” Although this book doesn’t really have a message or theme I believe that this book would be a great novel to provide to elementary students (K-5) for self selected reading.

  1. The story was indeed a great story and I believe in the power of imagination. Now if I were to use the book for teaching purposes, I would use it with the theme of "who is your role model". Elizabeti models everything after her mother and when she grows up, she will become the mother that she viewed from her mom. Even as parents, we do a lot of things our parents or grandparents did and as I read this book, I begin to think how I would raise my child. Of course that is a conversation for upper grades but for early grades in elementary, you could focus on imagination. Elizabeti had a great imagination and treated the rock as a real child, even by giving her a name.
