This book was written by Libba Moore Gray and illustrated by Peter M Fiore. It was published by Aladdin Paperbacks in 1993. This book is set in a rural area, and deals with an African American who worked for a White Family. The young white girl that Willie raised is asking her to visit so they can go out an experience the world as equals. This would be a great book to tie into slavery/segregation movement. I think it would be appropriate for grade 3 and up. I could see middle school students relating to the Civil Rights Movement. The pictures displayed a very authentic picture of the African American's role in a White home during the historical era presented in this book.
This is a review of multicultural literature and recommendations for use in the classroom.
