Coming on Home Soon

Coming Home Soon  was written by Jacqueline Woodson and illustrated by E B Lewis.  It was publised by G P Putnams' and Sons. This is a children's book that would be ideal for intermediate grades. The story tells the story of a little girl and her mom's relationship when leaves home to go to work in Chicago. The setting is during the war and the little girl stays with her grandmother. The characters are dealing with hard economic times as well as emotional strain. The language in this book is easy to understand and the pictures are inviting. I enjoyed studying the detail in the pictures and how they showed the emotions of the characters. I highly recommend this book. It would go very well with Social Studies lesson about the war. It was very authentic and relayed the times accurately.

  1. I love Jacqueline Woodson she is such a great author. I read this book previously in a graduate course I was taking. I believe that Jacqueline Woodson wanted students to learn how to deal with someone close to you being so far away. I also agree with you about the social studies content within the book.
