The Girl Who Loved Horses

Author/Illustrator: Paul Goble
Publisher: Aladdin Publishing
Copyright Year: 1987

This story is an Indian folk tale about a young girl who loved horses so much that she leaves her home and lives with the horses of the wild. Her family finds her and brings her back, but she becomes ill and her family realized that she has to live in the wild with the horses. The story provides some great visuals with bright colors and follows the actions being described in the book. The tale is a Native American tale but it doesn't specify which tribes told the story; may be a universal tale just changed based on the individual tribe. I think this story would be great for higher elementary students because the vocabulary seems appropriate for the students to comprehend.

  1. I agree, that to read it alone, upper elementary is the right age group. However, I think as a read aloud, younger students may also enjoy the story. The illustrations are so unique to Native American tribes & reflect the area of the USA where the story takes place that they may be a point of interest all their own!
