Faith book review

Book Review
Title: Faith
Author: Magda Nakassis, Cynthia Pon, Maya Ajmera
Published Date: 2009

“Faith” is a book with pictures of children of various religions practicing their faith in different ways. There are sentences that describe the pictures and an explanation at the end of the ways religions are organized and celebrate different events. The photos are engaging and beautiful and the language is appropriate for any age but geared towards upper elementary. All faiths are equally represented and accurately portrayed. There is glossary in the back of the book with specific religious terms that may be unfamiliar to students.
I would definitely use this text in a classroom. It is useful for independent reading but would also make an excellent read-aloud text which could lead to a discussion about similarities and differences in religious beliefs and practices which would highlight the diversity of the class and potentially lead to understanding those differences and valuing them.

  1. I like the authenticity of "Faith" because it features real life pictures of children observing religious holidays, complete with attire befitting the observance. Children are pictured praying, celebrating, singing, learning, and caring for others. Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, and indigenous spiritual traditions (Native American) are represented. "Faith" is a Global Fund for Children book. The Global Fund for Children Books is committed to discovering similarities that bind children everywhere together.
