Hello Night/ Hola Noche by Amy Costales
illustrated by Mercedes McDonald
2007
This rich picture book takes you through a beautiful nighttime walk with a mother and her stroller bound child. The soft & colorful illustrations help to describe what the child sees. Written in both English & Spanish this calming picture book is perfect for nap time at school or bedtime at home, but has enough vocabulary to be used as a read aloud in a pre-K, K, or 1st grade class.
What a beautiful book! It seems very calming, and that it might make for an excellent PM book book for P, K, & 1st graders. The reason I think it might be a good PM book is because it could also be helpful for parents who want to read to their children, but perhaps struggle with reading English.
ReplyDeleteWhat value is there in books like these for children who do not speak Spanish and who do not engage in Spanish lessons at school? What lessons does a book like this have to share?
Also, do you know if the text is more of an exact translation of English & Spanish, or a poetic translation? I'm simply curious--but do not have the Spanish skill to know.
The book is definitely a poetic translation in Spanish (to keep the rhythm and rhyming effect. I really appreciate that about the book. It sticks to the same message and has the same effect as the English part but it does change the sentence structure around a bit to get the rhyming effect in Spanish.
ReplyDeleteI agree as well with the poetic translation in Spanish. I learned some words from reading the story that I didn't know before. I love that it is dual language as well. It would be perfect for younger children in order to expose them to the Spanish language.
