Title: Hello World

The
book “Hello World” teaches students how to say hello in forty-two different
languages. This book could be used for students in grades K-5th. An
elementary school teacher could use this book during morning meetings. Every
morning teachers could teach their students a different greeting from another
language. They could also use this book for a mini lesson at the beginning of
an activity. During the lesson students will be asked to pick one language from
the book, do some research on that culture, and create a poster presentation
for that culture. I would recommend this book as a piece of multicultural
literature, because this books gives you insight into forty-one other different
cultures (languages).
As part of the morning routine in a first grade class I collaborated with, students went around in the morning and greeted each other. "Hello John" "Hello Kaitlynn". This was a great practice because many of the children had areas to work on--like patiently waiting for the other student to respond, making eye contact, and shaking hands. It was a great practice! Sometimes they would do a different greeting during the week ("Buenos Dias" etc...). This book would be a perfect connection for a class like this. I highly recommend this practice because of the way it increases community in class and improves social skills.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of saying hello in a different language during the morning meetings. As the students gather in the circle, for 42 days, each student must say hello to their number in a different language. You could extend it further for student to their name in the language they are saying hello in for that day. Students always find it amazing how different their names are in a different language.
