Wangari's Trees of Peace

Wangari's Trees of Peace by Jeanette Winter
Harcourt 2008

"People are figting over water, over food, we plant the seeds of peace." --Maathai

This is the true story of Wangari Maathai who dreamed of a Kenya with forests; the Kenya of her youth.  She realizes the connection between trees, prosperity, & the peace of her people.  She works to educate the people despite being jailed for her beliefs.  With interesting illustrations & simple language, the author brings complex social justice issues down to a child's level.  This book can be used to help teach any group of students, "Right is right, even if you're alone."

  1. I enjoyed the story and thought it had a great message. It shows that one person can move mountains but it also shows that others can help the cause as well. It does show social justice but portrays it in a great way for children.
