This book is a wonderful story about unconditional love from a mother to her daughter. Beautifully illustrated, this story takes you through a child testing her mother on how much love, her mother has for her daughter, through using vocabulary from the Inuit culture. Well written I would recommend this book for mid to upper elementary school level, because of the vocabulary from the Inuit culture are a little hard to pronounce. Many students no matter what culture could relate to this story.
The illustrations really aid in vocabulary building. Determining the meaning of many of the Inuit words is difficult, but the pictures certainly help. This would be an excellent chance to teach students how to begin picking up on context clues. The unconditional love shown by the mother in the book surpasses culture and all children would enjoy reading it.
ReplyDeleteI remember we had this book in my home. It's an excellent story about the intimate connection between a mother and daughter. It's a very memorable story, and one that I think even young children can connect to--even with the difficulty of the vocabulary words.
ReplyDeleteIt is definitely the perfect book for sending home for a bedtime reading as well.
Sorry--wanted to clarify the comment. I just think that this book makes a great book for parents to read with their children. Don't you?
ReplyDeleteAlso, although the vocabulary is high, for a "you read to me, I'll read to you" type reading experience, where parents take turns with their child, the book could make for a great at-home read.
