The Bracelet

This book was written by Yoshiko Uchida and illustrated by Johanna Yardley.  It was published by Penguin Young Reader Group in 1993.  This book's setting is in San Francisco in 1942.  It tells of the hard times and cruel treatment that Japanese Americans faced in 1942.  Many of these people were treated like animals.  I would recommend this book for intermediate grades and middle school.  It would be a great tie into US history around 1941.  I think it would be great to do a comparison with the Jewish Concentration Camps.  The illustrations were simple, but effective.  I think children will enjoy reading this book.  My favorite quote from the book was spoken by the Japanese-American second grader:  "I love America, but America doesn't love me."

  1. This book may be a good resource to introduce a novel like Eyes of the Emperor by Graham Salisbury. His novel deals with the discrimination of Japanese-American people (especially soldiers) during WWII. I did not even know about Japanese internment camps when I was in middle school--the time I learned about the Holocaust.
